In a world inundated with information, the essence of Islam often gets lost amidst misconceptions and sensationalism. But what if we took a moment to peel back the layers and discover the true spirit of this global religion. Muslims always say it is a religion of peace, purpose, and profound spirituality. Some other groups may disagree with that. What is the truth? Can this be easily answered? Or is it a journey that you have take to really find out yourself if you are interested? We will try to touch the surface of this subject here.
How did it all start?
Islam emerged in the early 7th century in the deserts of the Arabian Peninsula. It began when the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him or PBUH), a man known for his honesty and integrity, received the first revelations of the Quran through the Arch Angel Gabriel. These revelations, believed by Muslims to be the literal word of God (Allah in Arabic), formed the foundation of a faith that would soon spread across continents.
Core Beliefs: The Heart of Islam
At its core, Islam is built upon Five Pillars that guide a Muslim’s faith and actions:
- Shahada (Faith): Declaring there is no deity but God, and Muhammad is His messenger.
- Salat (Prayer): Performing five daily prayers facing the Kaaba in Mecca (for unified direction purpose only. Kaaba is not worshiped in any shape or form in Islam).
- Zakat (Almsgiving): Giving a portion of one’s wealth to those in need.
- Sawm (Fasting): Observing the fast during the month of Ramadan.
- Hajj (Pilgrimage): Making a pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in a lifetime if able.
Beyond these pillars, Muslims embrace Six articles of faith:
- Belief in One God
- Belief in angels
- Belief in holy books (including the ‘original’ Torah, Psalms, Gospel, and the Quran)
- Belief in prophets (from Adam to Muhammad (PBUH))
- Belief in the Day of Judgment
- Belief in Divine Decree (God’s predestination)
The Quran and Hadith: Guiding Lights
The Quran is the central religious text of Islam, regarded as the unaltered word of God. Complementing the Quran are the Hadiths, collections of sayings and actions of the Prophet Muhammad, which provide context and guidance on living a life in accordance with Islamic principles. As the prophet’s wife stated when she was asked about him “He is a walking Quran”. The Prophet’s life, speeches, and even side talks are all considered as interpretation and implementation of the Quran in the form a role model human being. The prophet showed us how a perfect implementation of God’s words can be implemented in our day to day life.
Principles and Ethics: A Way of Life
Islam is not merely a religion but a comprehensive way of life. It emphasizes:
- Justice and Compassion: “O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allah, witnesses in justice…” (Quran 5:8)
- Seeking Knowledge: The Prophet Muhammad said, “Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim.” (Sunan Ibn Majah)
- Respect for All: The Quran teaches respect for parents, neighbors, and even the environment.
- And many more.
Why Islam Resonates Today
In an age of existential questions, compelling materialism, scientism, naturalism, and so many other ‘..isms’ many find solace in Islam’s clear purpose and structure. The religion offers:
- Spiritual Fulfillment: Direct connection with God without intermediaries.
- Community and Brotherhood: A global community (Ummah or Nation) that transcends race and nationality.
- Moral Clarity: A framework for ethical living in a complex world.
- Combining logical thinking with Belief elements: Islam introduces the concept of compatibility between agreed on scientific discoveries and the faith elements. Both components fall together in place with not contradictions. This gives the Muslim a peace of mind and a sense of relief that the ever burning questions about our exitance are finally answered in a coherent way.
According to the Pew Research Center, Islam is the fastest-growing major religion in the world. By 2050, Muslims are projected to make up nearly one-third of the global population. This growth is attributed not only to higher birth rates but also to conversions fueled by the search for meaning and authenticity in modern life. We should also take into consideration that the number 1 religion today “Christianity” is actually composed of multiple religion that are considered to all fall under one religion “Christianity” when in fact different sects or branches of Christianity may not consider each other “Christians”.
Dispelling Myths: The True Essence of Jihad
One of the most misunderstood concepts is Jihad, often misconstrued as “holy war.” In reality, Jihad literally means “struggle” or “striving” in the way of God. This includes personal struggles against sin, efforts to improve society, and defending one’s faith peacefully.
The military side of Jihad is often intended for defensive reasons against an invading enemy or for protecting the oppressed under an oppressing regime including non-Muslims. Every other presentation of Jihad is either an abuse of the word by a political group, intended or ignorant representation y main stream media, or even as a part of intentional defamation campaigns by certain organizations or even countries in some instances. The term Jihad has been so misused and abuse that its core meaning is almost lost especially beyond Muslim countries.
Islam’s Contributions to Civilization
Historically, Islamic civilizations have contributed immensely to science, medicine, mathematics, and the arts. The works of scholars like **Ibn Sina** (Avicenna) in medicine and **Al-Khwarizmi** in mathematics (who introduced the concept of algebra) are testaments to Islam’s rich intellectual heritage. Just listing the names of scientists, philosophers, and scholars from the Islamic world and to explain the broad spectrum of their ideas and contributions would take multiple books to give it proper justice.
Embracing Diversity
Islam recognizes and respects the diversity of humanity. The Quran states: “O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another…” (Quran 49:13). This verse underscores the importance of understanding and appreciating differences.
In a famous Hadeeth by the Prophet (PBUH) he said ” “O people, verily your Lord is One and your father is one. Verily there is no superiority of an Arab over a non-Arab or of a non-Arab over an Arab, or of a red man over a black man, or of a black man over a red man, except in terms of Taqwa. Have I conveyed the message?” They said: The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) has conveyed the message.
Red man: White man
Taqwa: Being mindful of God’s (Allah’s) commands and guidelines.
your father is one: As all humanity comes from one ancestor ‘Adam’
